It’s been a busy week for Pokemon fans, as the companies involved revealed a new Pokemon called Gimmighoul for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet by introducing a limited form in Pokemon GO. Roaming Form Gimmighoul has already appeared in the game, with players able to catch it after linking PoGO to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sometime in 2023, but it’s unobtainable right now. However, while details aren’t exactly clear, Chest Form Gimmighoul will be obtainable in the new games.

And it seems players will be tasked with collecting 99 coins, or something to that effect, to obtain either Chest Form Gimmighoul or perhaps its evolution. Thanks to a recent and complete leak of new Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet, fans may already have an idea of what its evolution is called. It should be noted that this leak has been widespread and lines up well with others, but it could still easily be faked. However, either way, it reinforces the idea that Gimmighoul and its evolution are designed as a mockery of cryptocurrency.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Rumored Gimmighoul Evolution is Called ‘Ethaurum’

According to said rumor, the evolution of Gimmighoul is called Ethaurum. Breaking down the name, aurum is a reference to a gold, and Eth is a direct reference to cryptocurrency. In fact, it’s the common shorthand summarization for Ethereum, which is obviously close in name to Ethaurum. This name does support reliably Pokemon Scarlet and Violet leaks from the likes of Riddler Khu and Kaka, where its evolution has been described as a humanoid made of liquid metal. This supports the name then, but even if it is fake and the name doesn’t directly mock cryptocurrency, there are a few other ways to see this approach.

First, as with blockchain technology (if not exactly), it should be noted that Roaming Form Gimmighoul is locked to Pokemon GO and Chest Form Gimmighoul is locked to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, at least at first. It doesn’t line up 1:1, but it’s close enough that it’s clear what Game Freak, Niantic, and The Pokemon Company are doing. Furthermore, it’s the focus on coins that sell it too, such as with bitcoin, and official lore for Gimmighoul says it can control people and make them get more coins for it, which can be seen as a metaphor for mining for crypto. And, as it stands, its final evolution is an incomplete humanoid so obsessed with a certain coinage or value that it takes over its entire personality, with or without the name.

Ethaurum would make a great, and openly pretty funny, name for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but fans should wait and see how all of this manifests for judging too heavily, one way or another.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet release November 18 for Nintendo Switch.
